SOCMA’s annual Performance Improvement Awards Program was recently held in New York City to honor outstanding companies based on their individual achievement in environmental, health, safety, and security.
(Austin, TX)- December 13, 2007 – SACHEM announced today that its Cleburne, Texas facility had the honor of being awarded the first Educational Outreach Award Winner by Society of Chemical Manufacturers and Affiliates (SOCMA). The award is given to the company that has demonstrated the most educational impact from their outreach efforts. SACHEM’s primary effort in receiving this award was to coordinate the disposal of unwanted hazardous and toxic chemicals from the Cleburne High School chemistry store room through its Adopt-a-School program. Paul Hinman, ChemStewards Coordinator for SACHEM, Inc, says, “In years past, we have purchased different equipment for their class rooms and labs. But in 2006 it was apparent that the clean-up of these hazardous chemicals was necessary.” SOCMA will be awarding a cash prize of $2500 to Cleburne High School as a result of SACHEM’s efforts.
SACHEM’s Austin facility was a Silver Award Winner for demonstrating excellence in Product Stewardship, one of SOCMA’s five ChemStewardsTM Core Principles. SACHEM demonstrated outstanding Product Stewardship by developing and implementing a process to recover a key SACHEM product from a customer’s waste stream. This technology, called the Mobius SystemTM, purifies the recovered materials to allow for reuse of the key components in product formulations.
In addition to the Educational Outreach Award, SACHEM’s Cleburne facility was also a Bronze Performance Improvement Award Winner. To achieve Performance Improvement recognition, member facilities must demonstrate their commitment to SOCMA’s ChemStewardsTM Core Principles of
